For Mom and Baby

The birth of a new baby is exciting and sometimes overwhelming. At NHP, we want to help you prepare for the birth of a new baby and support you in caring for your baby, including understanding the importance of infant nutrition and breastfeeding.

Childbirth Education and Related Classes

Childbirth education classes, plus parenting and infant CPR classes, are available to you and your partner or support person free of charge at many primary care sites and hospitals.

Speak to the provider caring for you during your pregnancy or the facility where you plan to deliver about enrolling. If they do not offer a childbirth education program, NHP will reimburse you for the cost of these classes up to $130 per pregnancy. You can combine multiple classes up to the $130 limit per pregnancy. A Childbirth Education Form must be submitted to obtain the reimbursement.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding Support Classes

NHP will reimburse you for the full cost of breastfeeding support classes. Breastfeeding classes and support groups provide information about the benefits of breastfeeding, along with helpful tips, resources, and ways to manage common breastfeeding challenges. Your primary care site or the hospital where you plan to give birth may offer free a breastfeeding support program. Please talk with your provider for more information about breastfeeding support in your community.

Members must complete a Breastfeeding Support Form to request a reimbursement.

Free Breast Pump*

It’s easy!

Simply ask your In-Network PCP or Ob/Gyn to fax a prescription for the pump to an In-Network Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider. The DME provider will then arrange to have the pump delivered to your home.

Timing is everything.

Be sure to speak with your provider about the timing and delivery of your breast pump as it is important for breastfeeding mothers to establish breastfeeding before beginning to use a breast pump.

Need more help?

In some circumstances, a breastfeeding mother may benefit from a hospital grade breast pump.  Hospital grade breast pumps can be rented for up to 3 months. The rental pump would be delivered by the DME provider. Talk with your provider to learn more about your breast pump benefit or contact NHP Customer Service.
