Vision Care Benefit

The routine vision benefit for NHP Commonwealth Care members is managed by Spectera -- a national vision company that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group.

Benefits Provided by Spectera

  • Eye exams: Members may receive a comprehensive eye exam from a Spectera vision provider once every 24 months (plus copayment, depending on the Commonwealth Care plan type)
  • Glasses Members may receive one pair of eyeglasses from a Spectera provider once every 24 months (no copayment; lenses are free and frames are covered up to a $130 retail allowance)
  • Contacts Members are also eligible for contact lenses instead of glasses from a Spectera provider (restrictions apply – please call Spectera for additional information)

Spectera has a broad network of providers that includes private practices and top-quality retail providers, such as For Eyes, Cambridge Eye, and Wal-Mart. To locate a provider, visit the Spectera web site or call the provider line at 1-800-839-3242.

How to Access your Spectera Vision Benefits

Present your Spectera ID card to a Spectera vision care provider at the time of service. If you wish to access your vision benefit before you receive a Spectera ID card (please note that receiving your Spectera ID card may take several weeks from date of enrollment), simply let your provider know you have Spectera coverage, supply them with your name, address, and date of birth, and your provider will be able to verify your eligibility.
