Neighborhood Health Plan Physician Honored as Leader in Quality
Dr. James Glauber recognized for improving patient safety and quality
BOSTON, November 4, 2011 - Dr. James Glauber, Senior Medical Officer for Neighborhood Health Plan, received "The Leaders in Quality Award" at the Massachusetts Medical Law Report's 4th annual "Rx for Excellence" breakfast ceremony held today at the Boston Marriott Copley.
The award recognizes pioneers who have created and led efforts to enact change for large groups of patients and health care providers who improve patient safety and quality. Such pioneers include hospital quality managers who have developed innovative safety programs, government officials who focus on improving patient safety and health care access, and physicians whose work in their field demonstrate best practices.
"Dr. Glauber is a champion for improving quality when it comes to patient care," said Dr. Paul Mendis, chief medical officer for Neighborhood Health Plan. "His expertise has enabled Neighborhood Health Plan to provide better care for our members, particularly through managing asthma care."
Dr. Glauber developed and oversees Neighborhood Health Plan's Asthma Disease Management Program (ADMP), which last year won the Environmental Protection Agency National Leadership Award for Asthma Management.
With Dr. Glauber at its helm, the ADMP focuses on reaching out to members at risk and engaging their providers with actionable, patient-specific data to improve outcomes related to appropriate medication use and reducing hospital-based utilization. Since 1999, NHP has seen a 30 percent reduction in emergency room visits by its members in the program.
In addition to his contributions to improving asthma care, Dr. Glauber has developed many of Neighborhood Health Plan's quality measurement and reporting initiatives currently used to improve quality and efficiency within its network of contracted medical practices. These have included diabetes care, pediatric immunization and other components of well child care, non-emergent use of the ER, and promoting cost effective prescribing practices.
Currently, Dr. Glauber is Director of the Central Pediatric Asthma Program of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates where he is also Member of the Pediatric Quality Assurance Committee. Additionally, Dr. Glauber is Member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Health Quality Partners, an organization on the forefront of promoting the dissemination of quality metrics in the public domain.
Dr. Glauber is one of 55 honorees selected this year.
