EPA Honors Neighborhood Health Plan for Outstanding Leadership in Environmental Asthma Management

Boston, MA - June 25, 2010 - Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP) announced today that it has been awarded the National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA designs public health programs to improve the lives of people with asthma. It partners with other Federal agencies and non-profit organizations to develop a national education and outreach initiative to increase public awareness and to make positive changes in the management of environmental asthma triggers.

“Having our dedicated clinical staff recognized for their efforts to serve members affected by asthma is a testament to Neighborhood Health Plan’s commitment to its mission of ensuring the highest quality care for all our members,” said Deborah C. Enos, President and CEO of NHP. “We are certainly proud to receive such a prestigious award from the EPA.”

Part of the EPA’s asthma initiative involves recognizing outstanding programs and leadership in community asthma care improvement. The National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management ‘celebrates the outstanding programs and leaders who are improving the lives of people with asthma by delivering strong environmental asthma management as part of their comprehensive asthma care services.’* NHP is one of only five programs to receive this award.

Dr. James Glauber, NHP’s senior medical director and the asthma program leader, travelled to Washington to receive the award from Mike Flynn, director of the EPA Office of Radiation and Indoor Air on June 17. “It is an honor to accept the National Environmental Leadership Award for NHP,” said Dr. Glauber. “I am very proud to be a part of an organization that has the commitment, vision, and talented staff to combat the burden of asthma affecting so many of our members.”

The EPA presented the engraved crystal award to NHP at its Recognition Ceremony held during the Communities in Action National Asthma Forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C.
